Abstract: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is recognized for its critical role in cutting carbon emissions and combatting climate change. As such, USEPA is seeing an increasing number of UIC Class VI well permit applications for the permanent injection and storage of carbon dioxide in deep geologic reservoirs and an increased interest by states seeking primacy for permitting and enforcing UIC Class VI wells. As the number of CCS projects grows in the US, so does the necessity for the special consideration of potentially environmentally overburdened communities during the siting, development, and implementation phases of CCS projects. This presentation will provide a summary of the USEPA expectations and requirements for incorporating EJ considerations during the life of a CCS project. We will review key steps and recommendations to performing a thorough EJ assessment that will not only address recent USEPA concerns but will improve community engagement and transparency for successful CCS projects.
